# 011192The Future Is Here: ACO! or AC Oh-Oh?
Accountable Care Organizations are coming...Are you ready for the impact on your practice? Here's your opportunity to prepare.
The LACBA Healthcare Law Section and the Los Angeles County Medical Association will present a timely program that navigates the uncharted waters of Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Many believe this act will cause a sea change in delivery of healthcare services and will significantly affect business and financial arrangements among physicians, hospitals, other healthcare providers, and payors.
An ACO, as described in new Section 1899 of the Social Security Act, is a voluntary organization of healthcare providers who agree to be accountable for the quality, cost, and overall care of Medicare beneficiaries who are enrolled in the traditional fee-for-service program. To incentivize participation in ACOs, providers who meet certain evidence-based quality standards may receive additional reimbursement under the new "Medicare Shared Savings Program." The ACO program will be effective on January 1, 2012.
A distinguished panel of attorneys and physicians will address the establishment and implementation of ACOs, as well as the perceived risks and benefits, from the perspectives of various stakeholders in the delivery of healthcare services.
The panelists will discuss the various ACO models, including hospital foundations, physician groups, provider networks, and third party models. They will cover regulatory issues including antitrust considerations, the corporate practice of medicine, and other regulatory considerations as well as healthcare policy issues including governance and issues relating to control of the ACO, patient care utilization decisions, and Medicare Shared Savings Program funds.
