Program Information:
In re Garcia, currently pending before the California Supreme Court, will determine whether undocumented immigrants can be admitted to the State Bar of California. Come listen to Mr. Sergio Garcia himself and a panel of experts including former Supreme Court Justice Moreno; former state senator and State Bar of California Executive Director Joe Dunn; and Southwestern Law School Adjunct Professor of Law and MABA amicus brief author Juan Ramos discuss this landmark case. The training will be provided by the LACBA Immigration Section and the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles and will educate pro bono volunteers on how to help individuals apply for deferred action under President Obama’s new Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Policy, which allows eligible young undocumented immigrants who came to the US as children (DREAMers) to apply for work authorization and be safe from deportation for two years at a time.
